Beauty: A Retelling of
the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin Mckinley. One of
my favorite books, this is a lovely story. It pretty much sticks
to the traditional version, with only minor changes, but the fleshing
out of the characters and interaction between Beauty and the Beast
is what makes it so worthwhile. |
|
Beauty: A Novel by
Susan Wilson. A modern retelling of the story, with the "beast"
portrayed as a man with a horribly disfiguring disease. I enjoyed
this novel until the very end, which seemed tacked-on and unnecessarily
depressing.

Rose Daughter by
Robin McKinley. Like a lot of other people, I had read Beauty
and loved it, and so looked forward to Robin McKinley's re-retelling
of the Beauty and the Beast story. I found the first 1/3 of the
book fascinating, but as I got farther into the story, I found
myself getting frustrated at the lengthy, yet vague, descriptions
of things. It was strange how she could go on in great detail
about how various roses or rooms looked, yet at other times I
found myself re-reading a passage several times trying to figure
out what was going on. I really disliked the ending, too--after
several re-readings I finally figured out what had happened. The
author's imagery was certainly very beautiful, but sometimes it
was so out there that it was difficult to catch her meaning. I
prefer Beauty much, much more. |

The Fire Rose by Mercedes
Lackey. A somewhat predictable story, but still a lot of fun.
Set at the turn of the century, governess Rosalind Hawkins is
surprised to find that her new employer is a werewolf. |
|
Beast, by Judith Ivory.
|
|
The Gentle Beast,
by Colleen Shannon. |
|
Devotion, by Katherine
Sutcliffe. |
|
Lord Carew's Bride,
by Mary Balogh. This is one of my favorite authors, and this is
one of her best books (IMHO). |
|
Never Call It Loving,
by Gail Link. |
|
Beauty and the Beast
by Jan Brett. A children's version of the story. The illustrations
in this edition are rich and colorful-- I especially enjoyed the
pictures of the servants, who instead of being invisible, were
portrayed as animals! |

The Dragon Prince : A
Chinese Beauty & the Beast Tale, by Laurence Yep, Kam Mak.

by Jan Carr, Katy Bratun (Illustrator), Katy Bratum (Illustrator).
